"Practice safe text" campaign launched
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 NEWS) - A brand new campaign is hitting the
streets of Utah on Tuesday and its called "Practice Safe Text".
Cricket
is launching the statewide public safety campaign inviting teens,
college students, new drivers and others to practice safe text.
The
campaign comes a couple of months after former Governor Jon Huntsman
signed HB 290 into law banning texting while driving. Organizers say
this campaign is desperately needed to get the word out and help curb a
national epidemic of drivers paying more attention to their phones
while they are on the road.
The "Practice Safe Text" campaign
will educate Utahns about the dangers of texting while driving and
encourage them to make a pledge to stop texting while behind the wheel.
During the next three months, a mobile billboard will be traveling
around the state to high schools and high-traffic events like concerts,
sporting events, festivals, ect.
The goal is get over 10,000
signatures vowing not to text behind the wheel. New studies show that
texting while driving is more dangerous than drinking while driving.
The
campaign was launched Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Capitol Rotunda.
Speakers included Governor Gary R. Herbert, Utah Attorney General Mark
Shurtleff, and more.
